PE Pipe Identification Stripes: Standards, Limits and Co-Extrusion
Longitudinal colour stripes can help identify a polyethylene pipe family, but their meaning is not universal. Colour, stripe count, width and marking requirements vary by country, product standard, utility owner and purchase specification. A stripe must never replace the permanent printed marking or documentary traceability.
Do not identify a live pipe service from stripe colour alone. Confirm the printed standard, material designation, dimensions, pressure class, manufacturer and traceability code, then follow the asset owner's identification procedure.
1. Why Stripe Colour Is Not a Universal Code
International PE pipe standards cover dimensions, material performance, marking and test requirements, but the purchaser or national implementation can make project-specific selections. ISO 4427-2 explicitly includes pipes with identification stripes and states that the purchaser or specifier is responsible for selections that reflect local requirements and installation practice.
- The same colour can have different meanings in different markets.
- A standard may permit a solid-colour pipe, a black pipe with stripes, or a co-extruded layer.
- Stripe count and angular distribution can be specified separately from colour.
- Some utility owners impose requirements beyond the national product standard.
2. Water and Pressure-Drainage Pipe Examples
Blue stripes on black PE pipe are widely used for water applications, but they are not sufficient evidence of suitability for drinking water or pressure service. Compliance must be established from the required pipe standard, approved compound, pressure rating, hygienic approvals where applicable, permanent marking and test documentation.
ISO 4427-2:2019 covers PE pipe for potable water, raw water, pressure drainage and sewerage, vacuum sewer systems and other water uses. It also covers pipes with identification stripes and certain co-extruded constructions.
3. Gaseous-Fuel Pipe Examples
Yellow and orange markings are used in a number of gas-pipe specifications, but it is incorrect to state that yellow always means PE80 and orange always means PE100. Resin grade must be confirmed from the permanent marking and certificate. ISO 4437-2:2024 defines characteristics for PE pipes used to supply gaseous fuels; national adoptions and utility specifications determine the permitted colour and marking options.
GB/T 15558.2-2023 is the current Chinese national standard for buried PE pipes used for gaseous-fuel supply. It replaced GB 15558.1-2015 in full and took effect on June 1, 2024.
4. Mining, Industrial and Special-Service Pipe
Red or other coloured stripes may be specified for mining, fire-water, industrial, cable-protection or site-specific services. Those conventions are especially dependent on the authority, mine, plant or tender specification. Unstriped black pipe is not automatically siphonic drainage pipe, and striped pipe is not automatically pressure-rated.

6. Stripe Co-Extrusion Process
Core process controls
Compatible stripe compound
Use a PE-based compound approved by the material and product specification. Pigment, carrier resin and additive package must not compromise long-term performance.
Stable auxiliary output
Size the auxiliary extruder for the required total stripe area and operate it inside a stable screw-speed and melt-pressure range.
Balanced die distribution
Dedicated channels must deliver equal, continuous stripes at the specified angular positions without stagnation or cross-leakage.
Matched melt condition
Main and stripe melts should join at compatible temperatures and viscosities. The acceptable difference comes from the selected compounds and die trial, not a universal fixed number.
Verified cooling and adhesion
Inspect continuity, width, location, surface quality and resistance to separation using the required test method.
7. Quality Control and Traceability
- Confirm stripe count, colour, width and circumferential position against the purchase specification.
- Check continuity at startup, after every interruption and at the defined sampling frequency.
- Verify that stripes remain flush and do not peel, smear, wander or cause wall-thickness defects.
- Check the printed marking independently; visual stripe inspection is not a substitute.
- Record both main and auxiliary compound batches and all process changes.
